Security officers stationed at municipal buildings are expected to attend an 11:30 a.m. rally tomorrow in front of City Hall as part of a de-facto walkout, according to Service Employees International Union (SEIU) representatives.
Abacus Corp. employs about 200 people to perform unarmed uniform security duties at city-owned buildings and worksites, including water treatment plants and public housing projects.
The company is under a union drive by SEIU, which has filed charges of discrimination, coercion and retaliatory firings against the company. Some employee grievances will be shared at the rally, SEIU’s Julie Karant told The Brew.
City Council members Odette Ramos and Jermaine Jones are expected to join the rally.
“We need city contractors to follow our laws and respect our workers,” Jones said in a statement. “I call on Abacus to respect security officers’ demands for the right to form a union so they can have the job security they deserve for keeping us safe.”
Abacus has gotten over $20 million in taxpayer funds since 2017, mostly through “emergency” contract extensions without competitive bidding.
